OSCILLATION OF SIDE SPARE WHEELS - P.II. Referring to PN. {Mr Northey} 5/WT22.6.33. We have carried out a few tests measuring the deflection of the Phantom side spare wheel carrier. We find that 80% of the deflection takes place along the tubular brackets from the frame. At the beginning of this year the length of these tubes were increased to raise the spare wheel. This was done in order to improve the appearance of the car. The deflection of the new bracket is 50% greater than the previous one. These tests have been done without the wheel receiving any support from the step-iron. We do not think it is likely that we shall even be able to support the wheel only from the tubular bracket. Unfortunately we cannot rely on any definite degree of support from the step-iron as this is effected by the coachbuilders. The fitting of the wells in the wings to the tyres and the fitting of the well to the step-iron, makes so much difference to the steadiness of the wheel. Some time back we put on the coachbuilders drawing that the bottom of the well should be bolted to the step-iron. We should like to know if the bottom of the well is bolted to the step-iron on the car which has caused the complaint. In the meantime we are testing alterations in order to reduce the actual deflection of the carriers. Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /Les. | ||
