| Experimental Dept. Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /Rm. {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 2/KT. Sept. 20th 1933. The Adamant Engineering Co. Ltd., Dallow Road, Luton. For the attention of Comdr. Matravers. Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter of the 8th Sept. The delay in replying has been due to the writers absence from the works. We note your remarks about the steering which we fitted to the Bentley and that you recommend the L.7 type gear. Actually we are so far satisfied with the worm and nut steering on the Bentley, and we do not think it is worth while proceeding further with tests on the Marles steering. With regard to the Phantom, we have already fitted the gear you have returned to us and shall continue our tests thereon. The initial results from this gear indicate that it has a very low efficiency, considerably lower than the one with which we were previously so satisfied. However it may improve with use. We have tried your recommended oil without materially affecting its characteristics. When we have given it a chance to settle down, we should like to give you an opportunity to try the steering as may be you will consider it can be improved. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
