| 1033 Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /TAS. {T. Allan Swinden} 5/KP. Experimental Department. 4th. January 1940. C.H.Fisher Esq., 22 Hazel Oak Road, Shirley, Warwick. Dear Sir, As you will doubtless remember we received from you a short time ago one dual Stromberg carburetter with 30 mm. throttles and 1.1/32" chokes . We have rebuilt this carburetter with a 36 mm. throttle body, .050 ringed main jets, and 52 # mechanical bye pass. We have also modified the idle system in order to use plain idle tubes and secondary air bleeds in the throttle body. This carburetter has been fitted to an 8 cylinder engine in a chassis and has solved several of our problems without so far creating any new difficulties. The really cold weather has brought along our chief trouble, namely a very bad weakness, sufficient to cut the engine right out on pick-upfrom 10 MPH. in direct gear. Increased jet size does practically nothing to cure this trouble when using 1โ " chokes, and everything points to the need for the smaller choke carburetter. We believe that you have stated that with 36 mm. throttles the chokes should not be reduced below 1โ ". We should be glad to know into what trouble you expected us to run, and whether, since we believe this main carburetter body with 1.1/32" to be a standard Ford unit, it is possible to obtain such parts in this country instead of from the U.S.A. Yours faithfully, for ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
