| To Sg. {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} From Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Y's ys061. ys13. HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 1/AJ.24.9.30. With reference to the attached. This is exactly the same gearbox as R. {Sir Henry Royce} and myself tried on the Twelve Cylinder 'Maybach' in the spring. There are a number of people now taking up this 'Maybach' arrangement. The 'Chrysler' are using the 'Maybach' patent jaw clutch, also they are not using helical gears but retaining the spool gear. We maintain that the easiest and quietest silent third change was on the 'Maybach'. We have had in mind to recommend the purchase of a 'Maybach' Twelve Cylinder car. Attached herewith is a copy of letter we sent to Barkers' to see what prospects there were of obtaining this car in England. Apart from the interest in the gearbox, the 'Maybach' car is of interest because of the twelve cylinder engine, which R. {Sir Henry Royce} looks upon as our future Phantom engine and also the fact that the arrangement of the induction pipe and carburetters is what we should like to use.
