| -2- 57 The increased freedom of our steering to that obtained in Derby must be taken into account, a feature that also affects the steering qualities are the tyres. We carried out our tests with silent tread worn to the canvas, which gave a broad flat surface. We kept these on untill it was no longer safe to run with them. We then fitted new silent tread tyres and allthough the same features were kept (ie) pressures 40lbs and correct balance, joggles were increased by 25%. The cause of this we put down to the increased resiliantancy of the tyres. We should be pleased to have your views on this. You will have observed in this report rear damper loads set to I00lbs H & LP. {Mr Lappin} We tried this setting for high speed work over ridges; which under other conditions lifted the rear passenger off the seat travelling at 60 MPH which is quite normal for the condition of the road. We found that with the equal higher pressure the rear passenger was hardly lifted at all, in fact on two or three occasions the passenger was not disturbed at all. With a compliment of four passengers in the rear one could not wish for a better setting of the dampers; theriding of the car at the rear was quite equal to I8 EX. We did not get the same results by fitting the dynamic resistances when the load was I00 lbs HP and 75 lbs LP. {Mr Lappin} Our results confirm yours that an even H & LP {Mr Lappin} is needed, if anything we would say slightly more LP {Mr Lappin} is needed. We examined the springs a week ago taking two completly apart. The lubrication was very good right to the tips. The three bottom leaves of the front spring on one side were not well lubricated and had rusted. We have had no squeaks from the springs up to the moment. The side steering tube which as to be shortened is not yet ready. We are not over keen about the strength of a jointed steering tube and it will only be used to verify the tests. The fitting of French traction tread tyres to the rear has brought up very bad Pomeroy groans from I0 MPH. downwards. G.W.H. SBE-128E | ||
