| COPY. To Wor. {Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from BJ. BJ12/H12.10.20. Re Armoured Cars. Mr. Royce telephoned to me today a copy of the telegram which he sent to the Works, as follows - " Re Government order, my impression is we can deliver providing we have a free hand and make all necessary parts we cannot buy from English held stock. Wittering will provide complete arrangement drawing of tyre pump and drive in 10 days or less, adopting scheme settled upon last week. This will enable the Works to make this item. "and Magneto should be adopted as we first recommended, and providing we can buy these from stock or Government can deliver from their stock, we can easily fit, providing we or Government have suitable English driven magnetos. We may have these latter, as this is our standard aero practice. They should concentrate on hand turning gear, probably cutting gear tooth upon clutch ring or turning out special clutch rings from stock forgings. The whole should be crude and robust and made to work as well as time will allow. BJ. will remember that these items are extra Govt. requirements not delays by R.R.Ltd. except for hand turning gear, they should give lasting satisfaction. Models of anything purchaseable should be brought to me at Russell Hotel on Thursday." As this matter will probably be discussed at the Board Meeting on Friday next, will you kindly let me know which method of dealing with the matter you consider is likely to be most rapid - 1. If Mr. Royce and the Works design and manufacture a complete mechanical tyre pump and fittings, or 2. If we obtain the mechanical tyre pump manufactured and produced elsewhere and we only supply the fittings. It is understood that in both cases we shall not be required to fit these to the chassis, but merely to supply the pump and fittings ready for them to be delivered to the War Office, who will arrange for their own people to fit them as probably these armoured cars will be in Mesopotamia before the pumps are fitted. | ||
