| S/W. {Sales / Derby Works} (---) c. to Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 8235. Sg {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} 3/D15.6.31. RECEIVED 16 JUN 1931 Re: Hydraulic Shock Absorbers. ------------------------- Referring to the above and the question of the WW. design containing certain features which were not satisfactory from a manufacturing point of view, after speaking to you about this at Derby last week, I wrote to DA. {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} to find out what had happened. I enclose copy of memorandum he has written to BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} on this subject. In his letter to me he says that when the difficulty was explained, R. {Sir Henry Royce} agreed to use either square or parallel serrations, - whichever Derby preferred. He then goes on to say that Derby have a satisfactory shock damper for production, and I presume this is the type referred to in the first paragraph of Worb/T23.5.31 and which I understand is to be type-tested on the 10,000 mile 20/25? I should be glad to know whether this will also deal with the question of modified form of shock absorber for the 40/50? If not, what is happening in that direction? On the question of dashboard control for shock absorbers, which, as mentioned in a former memo., is our ultimate aim, DA. {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} says, "We have already sent to Derby a scheme for this in connection with the double piston shock damper, and this experiment can be put in hand immediately it is desired." I should be glad to know what is happening about this, because it is really a very attractive feature and would be a very helpful selling point if we could offer shock damping with variable control from the driver's seat for the Continental Model, and then later on bring it along as standard.
