MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT,
Roads Department,
7, Whitehall Gardens,
London, S.W.1.

3rd April 1924.

Ref: R.V.4118.

Sir,

I am directed by the Minister of Transport to refer to your letter of the 25th ultimo forwarding a copy of a letter from Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd. on the subject of identification marks painted on the petrol tanks of motor vehicles.

I am to state that although in strictness identification marks should be displayed on plates in accordance with the provisions of the Fourth Schedule to the Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regulations, 1921, the Minister understands that the Police will not take proceedings in cases where the required marks are painted or otherwise displayed on a vehicle so as to be easily distinguishable.

I am to add that the Police would no doubt take proceedings in cases where, owing to the shape or nature of the surface on which they have been painted (e.g. a curved or corrugated surface) the marks are not easily distinguishable.

I am, Sir,
Your obedient Servant,

(Signed) P.C.FRANKLIN.
