"STORK" & "HERON" EXHAUST SYSTEM. X.3859.

We send herewith N.sch.1358 shewing the silencer combined with the cut-out which it is intended to use on the "Stork" and "Heron" and probably the "Seagull". This is based on the layout shewn on Ns.{Norman Scott}ch.1342, but in order to get a little more room for the pipe to pass the gearbox, and to clear the forward brake ropes, we have abandoned the idea of keeping the exhaust system perfectly straight in the plan view. The connecting pipe between the silencer and the trouser piece has a slight double bend in the plan view, and we should be glad if Derby would set this out in conjunction with N.sch.1352.
We expect that some slight modification may be necessary for "Heron", as the brake carrier lever is not in exactly the same position, but as this is still under discussion we cannot say now.
The fact that there is a single back brake rope has been taken advantage of to push the silencer further out, and now we should like to push it in again about .5" to give us a little more clearance for our cut-out mechanism. We should also like the silencer brought forward 1.5" to give us more clearance for the brake mechanism.
With reference to the springs operating the valve, the exact strength of these is a matter for experiment, for instance, it may be found unnecessary to have both the tension springs on the front valve, and the axial torsion springs on the rear valve.
