X.3456 - RE RADIATORS FOR 40/50 CHASSIS

It has been agreed all-round that provision should be made for blocking off a portion of the radiator in the cold weather. We consider that the radiators should be made so that this can be carried out in a simple manner. At present, the only way we can hold any form of plate, is to use some long bolts through the tubes of the radiator. There is great risk in doing this that the tubes may be damaged. We recommend, that in the design of the radiator there should be incorporated either a special thick tube for this purpose or better still, studs should be permanently fixed into the radiator so that one only has to put the baffle on and fix it by means of a nut. We think also it would be a good idea if some scheme was made so that the plates which cover the radiator are permanently carried on the car. We suggest we might use something like 22 gauge aluminium and when not in use on the radiator, it could be fixed on the sides of the bonnet inside. We prefer aluminium to three-ply wood because the wood always warps and does not keep flat. It is pretty certain that if we simply supply some loose plates that when the engine time comes to use the plates they will not be available. We have also got to bear in mind that although all our complaints now are of the engine being too cold, we were, by actual results forced to use the size of radiator we now have
