In the case of aero engines where we normally use double springs we have had two cases of engine failure due to valve springs breaking and the valve falling in the cylinders. During the experimental development of the Bentley we did issue some double valve springs to LeC.3297 and room was made for the inner spring by reducing the diameter of the grummet, but these springs were not adopted. We think that urgent attention should be given to testing out the locking ring scheme to LeC.3873 with a view to its adoption generally both for car and aero work.
