TUNGSTEN IGNITION CONTACT POINTS.

Two more sets of points are herewith sent for your inspection. The pair marked (27) is the finished result of the test referred to in our last report EFCL/T12.9.27, having been run with the new scrubber without damper. You will see that these are somewhat better than the previous samples sent, but there is still a tendency to develop the bluish oxidation, which tendency has never been present on any of the Delco-Remy run points. It is this tendency which we hope to eliminate completely. These points were run their 10,000 miles with standard finer primary coil and previous std. ballast (i.e. not the new double ballast just standardised).

In contra-distinction to this set of points we send you a set of points run under standard RR. conditions as regards the contact breaker, but with a still further finer primary coil than the one we have standardised, together with the standardised double ballast resistance - a condition which, if the phenomenon were purely an electrical one, should be the most highly favourable to the points. But you will see that the points go very definitely badly in these circumstances.

It is therefore definite that these experiments are shewing up very clearly the fact that the good behaviour of the points lies in the mechanics of their meeting and parting, apparently very much more than in the electrical conditions of the circuit.
