X 2065 INSTRUCTIONS FOR FITTING CHARGED SECTIONS. 7.A. 11. The cells into which the new sections are fitted should be connected to the battery when it is in a discharged state so that they get the benefit of a few hours finishing charge and they must not on any account be subjected to discharge until all the plates, both positive and negative, gas freely on charge. If this does not occur on the occasion of the first charge the cells must be cut out of circuit on discharge and inserted in one or more following charges until all the plates gas freely as described, and they must not be considered ready for service until the following conditions have been reached:- (1) A free evolution of gas from both positive and negative plates during a period of five or six hours. (2) A voltage of at least 2.7 per cell while being charged at a rate of 30 amperes. (3) No increase of specific gravity during the last three hours of the charge. When sections are supplied with double connecting lugs for use as either right or left hand, the turned up portion not required can be either cut off or bent back. On the first twelve charges after the new sections are fitted they should be overcharged to the extent of one or two hours at normal rate. | ||
