USE OF RED FIBRE.
----------------

It is most important not to use red fibre. Where red fibre is specified under plugs on West WitteringHenry Royce's home town drawings we should use soft aluminum. Where fibre is used for frictional purposes, the right material to use is Bakelite, produced in the same way and with the same note on it that we have found necessary to add to the slipper drive friction material. This is Bakelite which has been sanded to an accurate thickness before being supplied.

If there is any doubt at all about whether red fibre ought to be used, the matter should be referred to me.

The only instances that I know of where red fibre would possibly still be used are all shaped face joints like ball bearing covers on the gear box, inspection covers, etc. In this case it is a jointing material pure and simple, and under such circumstances it represents the only material we know of for certain purposes.
