Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager}/C.Lee.7/OH.28.12.42. We have recently had Mr. Lappin's car Chassis No. B.22.AW. at the Clan Foundry with a complaint of "noisy" gear box. After dismantling the gear box, the following parts were found damaged. 1. Spring retaining ring in ball race housing assembly broken. 2. Teeth on worm wheel (servo) damaged. 3. Segments on overdrive (outer cone) broken off where cone slides on 3rd motion shaft, this allowed cone to turn round on shaft. 4. Overdrive inner cone "picked up" where it had revolved in outer cone. See photographs attached. The affected parts have been replaced. The box has now run 76,500 miles and the car is again in service. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Wym{G.
