BY/SB.{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister}4/MG.19.5.39 (cont'd) became wedged between the timing case and one of the gears producing a knock which was complained of by the Owner. Thirdly, the wedging action became suddenly more pronounced, or some pieces got between two of the gears, thus enormously putting up the load and causing the teeth on the idler to strip off. The material of this gear was originally of a coarse texture which we now know to wear rather quickly. All replacements are in a finer grain of material, which, apart from wearing better, should be more reliable from the point of view of mechanical strength. We do not expect many failures of this sort, but we will keep a close watch on the rate of wear of these gears to see whether this factor is of any serious consequence. BY/SBS | ||
