The point was then raised by Mr. Walker that the trouble in the Foundry with the 8-cyl. pattern since its arrival was due to shrinkage of the original pattern, this pattern being made for economy in African Mahogany, whereas had it been anything but an experimental job Honduras Mahogany, with possibly metal barrels, would have been used.

It was suggested that in view of the dual roles this pattern had to play, it would have paid to have used the more expensive materials. However, no figures relating to such increased costs were available to enable any conclusions to be drawn.

With a view to avoiding delays in the future, we should like to submit the whole of the proposed car engine programme to the Pattern Shop for their consideration. This at present consists of four engines, three of which have been completely detailed, and scheme drawings are available for the fourth. The units are as follows:-

6-Cyl. Engines.

(1) Bentley 60.
Cast Iron Monoblock - 3¼" bore - E.B.3778.

(2) Similar engine - 3¼" bore - Tappet wall moved out. No water between walls. E.B.4387
(2 sheets)

8-Cyl. Engines.

(3) Bentley 80.
Cast Iron Monoblock - 3¼" bore - E.B.3950.

(4) Similar engine - 3¼" bore. Aluminium block. Dry liners. Tappet wall moved out. P.D.308.

Bearing in mind that there is a pattern in existence from which both the eight and six-cyl. engines are being produced, we should be glad if Mr. Walker could supply the following information by Monday next to enable a decision to be taken on future experimental programmes.
