X8420 C. Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY3/H. 2/3.26. We have received a letter from R {Sir Henry Royce} /R. of A. {Mr Adams} Inc. in connection with the user of four wheel brakes. We took out a patent based on N.Sch. 1860 for the addition of friction to the pivot of the swing link carrying the "T" shape balance lever. An examination of our scheme shows that we have got nothing very special except tightening up the bolt to maintain friction, and CY. wrote to us asking for details following up the scheme which had been patented. I have taken the matter up with Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} who replies that N.Scheme 1860 was never adopted because it did not produce sufficient friction. The various other suggestions which have been made by yourself have been tried, with the same result. Is there any prospect of us getting a scheme similar to the 20 HP. which will enable us to deal with the 40/50. on similar lines? The difficulty at the moment is that whilst we can tighten up the bolt and get sufficient friction on the top pivot, movement seems to take place and wear results which relieves the basis of load.
