Dear Sirs,
FOR THE ATTENTION OF MR. W.A. ROBOTHAM.
We have now been able to examine the rings referred to in the second paragraph of your letter of the 17th instant, reference as above, and there is no doubt that one or two of the Scraper Rings, as you suggest, do not show from their markings that they are not as flat as they should be.
It is interesting to note, however, that they are hammered rings, and when we made rings by this process, the slotting was done after the rings were honed on the sides. With the present day method of manufacture by heat forming, several deliveries of which you have now had, the rings are side finished after slotting, and therefore, any movement created by this latter process is eliminated. This criticism, therefore, does not apply to rings you are using at present.
On the other hand, it must be borne in mind that the departure from flatness, which is so readily demonstrable to the eye by marking, is an extremely
