NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I STEERING COLUMN.

We understand from HR. that Mr. Minchin has made a rather emphatic complaint about the controls rattling in the head of the steering column. We believe this complaint is not uncommon, and we know that the New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I steering is not quite so good if anything in this respect as the Silver Ghost.

We are also aware that the usual practice is to give all the tubes a permanent set, which has the effect of loading up their bearings. It is on the assumption that this method is not adequate, at any rate as a lasting cure of rattles, that we have made N. scheme 2131. (herewith) shewing one or two suggestions for an anti-rattle device on the bearing between the stationary tube and the worm tube, and also on the bearings of the other tubes, though we believe that this latter case is not the cause of the trouble, but most of the rattles occur between the stationary tube and the worm tube.

These suggestions go mostly on existing steerings, except one, which requires a new control lever, and we should be much obliged if you could rig them up and test them. Should they prove successful we could extend the idea somewhat for a future steering to generally increase the dimensions.
