THE COX-CAVENDISH ELECTRICAL CO., LTD., London, N.W.10.
I wished to know the steadiness or otherwise of a mechanism driven, through a roller chain gear, by a steadily running electric motor, at a speed of 1,700 R.P.M. The OSCILLOSCOPE ENABLED ME TO SEE THREE DIFFERENT CYCLIC IRREGULARITIES, one a variation of small amplitude and high frequency, another of greater amplitude and less frequency, and a third irregular kick. Examination of the driving sprocket and chain under the light of the Oscilloscope showed that THE PRIME CAUSE OF ALL THREE VARIATIONS WAS THE CHAIN riding on the flank of the tooth when first engaging, and afterwards slipping down into its proper position
I have also investigated the vena-contracta and formation and flight of globules in a jet revolving at high speed, the centrifugal force being the impelling force causing the jet. . . . . . . . The instrument is very useful for examination of commutators and brushes of dynamos and motors to find the cause of sparking; irregular running and sparking contact breakers can be very conveniently investigated with the machine.

SOME APPLICATIONS—(continued).

provided for varying the speeds of spindles (as, for instance, by the addition of weights to the jockey pulley), all spindles or bobbins can immediately be set to run at the same speed.

Another example is the case of Ring Spinning Frames, where the true action of the Traveller can immediately be seen and rectified, if necessary; where the winding speed can be definitely ascertained; and where all other information as to the operation—which is often only guessed at—can be obtained with certainty and without any elaborate preparation.

Other uses of the OSCILLOSCOPE to textile machinery refer to Twisting Frames, Speed Frames, Roving Frames, Doubling Frames, Mules, and the other numerous machines used in the Textile Industry.

These applications are of interest not only to the Makers of the machines used in this Trade but also to the MANUFACTURERS OF TEXTILES, for the use of the Oscilloscope in their MILLS. By the simple process of carrying out fortnightly or monthly examinations of their machines with our OSCILLOSCOPE, Manufacturers are assured of HIGH QUALITY PRODUCTS and a MINIMUM OF WASTAGE and examinations can be carried out at any time, during or out of working hours. The equipments for Mills usually consist of two or more complete Oscilloscopes together with a larger number of gearboxes only, and often a still larger number of lamps; we therefore have to quote separately for each complete installation and shall be glad to do so on receipt of information as to requirements.

THE FIRST COST OF AN OSCILLOSCOPE MILL INSTALLATION IS EASILY PAID FOR IN A FEW MONTHS BY REDUCTION OF WASTAGE, particularly in the case of SILK SPINNING MILLS.

Hosiery Manufacturing Machinery. (Type "A").

These applications are similar to those of sewing machines, and particularly refer to the correct adjustment of Flatlock Machines, Lockstitch Machines, Overlock Machines, Shell Scalloping Machines, and to the various problems connected with Fabric-Making Machines. Thus is production improved and speeded up.

Sewing Machines. (Type "A").

The accurate adjustment and testing of sewing machines.
