1305. 19th August, 1941. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GB.2/RH.{R. Hollingworth} Your ref: JM{Mr Morley}/SW/Spring. Messrs. Samuel Fox & Co., Ltd., Stocksbridge Works, Nr. SHEFFIELD. Dear Sirs, This memo is concerned with car springs for post war use. One spring is shown in the enclosed print No. RM.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}735. This spring is only shown in outline because our design of this spring involves much higher stresses than you recommend. Black springs with speared leaves would be accept-able, but we would like the leaf material to be open annealed, de-scaled and cold rolled as described to Mr. Bastow. We would like your suggestions for this spring when designed to be lubricated by a central chassis system. The oil would be led to unions at the ends of the second leaf, as rubber bushes are to be fitted to the spring eyes. In the first place, we leave the details of the oil grooves etc., to you, our only stipulation being that the springs must be lubric-ated efficiently. Gaiters will be fitted. We would like to know whether you can supply two or three pairs of sample springs quickly, preferably with the lubrication system, but if not, without it. In the latter case, we would like the clips to be long enough to allow 5 pieces of interleaving .062" thick. The rubber insulators between the spring and spring bracket on the axle will be proportioned so that there is no dead part at the centre of the spring. Can you obtain grooved section steel in a section suitable for this spring?. We like springs to be as light as is possible, consistent with good service. -Over- | ||
