Generally speaking, we were more impressed by this arrangement as a means of improving the car when handled by inexpert drivers under modern traffic condition, than we have been by anything since the introduction of four wheel brakes. Its behaviour in the hands of the public will shew whether the design is satisfactory. Maybach Overspeed Gear. We examined the dogs on this box. They are only backed off about 10° in each case in such a manner as to prevent the dogs engaging until the car and axle speed are synchronous (See Sketch. The spring causing engagement is not exceptionally strong. A Dewandre vacuum relay is used to operate the toggle to which this spring is attached. The reason this is necessary is to enable the lever which pre-selects the gear to be on the column and operated by the lightest finger pressure. On the road it is necessary to employ a certain amount of intelligence when using the easy change overspread, because though the pre-selection is automatic and the dogs are forced together by the spring as soon as the pedal is lifted from the | ||
