R.R. 493A (50 H) (D.D. 31, 12-6-25) J.H.D. EXPERIMENTAL REPORT. -2- Expl. No. REF: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/TAG/L/G17.9.25. radiator (which is mounted just below the engine nose piece) is 3 ft. 6 ins. and the dia. of the propeller being only 8 ft. - the thing looks very bad. The water temperature is controlled by the usual shutters and no trouble was experienced in keeping the engine cool. The oil temperature was quite normal. We do not anticipate trouble with rocker leaks, as the engine is completely cowled, but there is an oil leak from the nose piece, or I should say, from the propeller thrust bearing oil retaining nut. The Vickers engine will not be such a difficult job for camshaft modification but the Hawker engine will be a perfect terror on account of their wonderful cowling and the bulkhead. This machine will be ready about Monday next. I have seen the Hawker people and they say they have quite a lot to do to it yet. I will report again after the next run on the Vickers which I hope will be on Friday afternoon. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/TAG. | ||
