In turning the above matter over in my mind, it occurred to me that you could try out some tests either on the car or a stationary apparatus, which might be of considerable value to us at the moment. 1. I have instructed Mr. Pendlebury to fully anneal a pair of brake drums, so as to soften them to their lowest brinell figure, in order that you might try such drums either on a car or on a special brake rig. 2. Possibly a reduction in area of the material might considerably affect the results, for instance, if we halved the area of the Ferodo we should double the surface pressure, and possibly this might, without existing brinell figures, stop the polishing, as it seems to me obvious that the pressure per sq.inch on the fabric must bear a relation to the brinell figure on the drum which it is possible to use - only experimental suggestion.
