HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} X5310 DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}2/MS.11.31. X5310 C. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} 25HP. SYNCHRO MESH GEARBOX We have seen notes on a telephone conversation re. the above box, and wish to comment on HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}' remark that the spigot bearing looks inadequate. Assuming that the 3rd. motion shaft between the rear end bearings has no stiffness the load on the spigot bearing due to the 3rd. speed at full throttle is 250lbs. This bearing is rated as a roller bearing and compares favourable with almost any other bearing in the gearbox. In fact, the 3rd. motion shaft between the two rear end bearings is very stiff so that the actual load it does receive is certainly considerably less than the above. It is possible that there might be considerable loads due to the inaccuracy of alignment of the gearbox shafts. We should like to know whether there is any indication of this. We are not sure from the note whether the criticism arose due to the bearing shewing signs of wear or whether it was the result of inspection and general impression. We should like to point out that most other cars do not have a 3rd. bearing in the centre of the box, which will increase the load on the spigot bearing. DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
