SERVO.

The servo was not efficient, and all known faults were prevalent - faulty floating of the back plate, bridge alignment not correct, three pins too tight in bronze bushes, and digging in preventing load being applied to discs. A new design of flexible carrying plate, and needle type bridge bearing has been instructed.

STEERING - Front Axle with 4º Transverse Pivot Inclination.

The steering has remained selective, stable, and free from any sign of wobble. There have been no oil leaks from the bottom of the pivot pin joint on to the brakes. The steering for the first 1,000 miles was on the heavy side for shunting and cornering.

BRAKES.

The brakes were fitted up with Ferodo bonded asbestos linings. The efficiency has varied. At times there was hardly any front braking owing to the servo becoming inefficient through mechanical faults. The brakes were used extensively, due to the traffic conditions, road conditions and high speeds. Consequently the wear is greater in comparison with the French tests.

The total amount of adjustment on the rear is 14 complete turns. 12 were used on the N.S. and 13 on the O.S. The front with the old type 5-notch adjustment - 3 notches were used on the O.S. and 2 on the N.S. The brakes therefore would have required re-lining after a further 2,000 miles used under the same conditions.

On one occasion only was there juddering of the brakes. On this occasion Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} reported having had juddering after the car had been washed during a week-end run.

REAR AXLE.

The rear axle was fitted up with a modified thrust race on the pinion. The axle throughout the test did not give any indication of failure, and was quiet forward and on the over-run. Wakefield E.P. oil was used. When dismantled the bronze cage of the thrust race was found cracked. A separate report of this has been sent out.
