GOSHAWK - IMPROVED JOINT TO N. SCH. 1315, AT PENDU-Y4265 LUM END OF SIDE STEERING TUBE.

In reply to By3/P81122., we agree that there is a certain difficulty in tightening up the ball end in the pendulum lever if the thread is tight. As you <handwritten: now> <strikethrough: finally> conclude it is intended that the ball end should be a part of the side steering tube, and it is necessary to take it down when removing the latter. There are several ways in which this difficulty could be overcome but we expect that you have a number of forgings of side steering <handwritten: levers> tubes and possibly a number of ball ends which you do not wish to scrap. We have therefore on N.sch. 1347 shewn you three methods.

(1) For existing ball ends and pendulum levers.
(2) This calls for a new ball end.
(3) This calls for in addition, a modification to the boss of the pendulum lever.

The suggestion is that you should use the first proposal as far as is necessary and then alter the dies for future supplies.

Alternative schemes which we have considered are a tommy bar through a hole in the ball end inserted from the rear end of the side steering tube when the spring pad is removed - a square or screw-driver slot beyond the screwed end of the ball end, a keyway in the threaded end of the ball end, and a washer engaging in this keyway, also with a slot or projection on the pendulum lever, and some others, but we think that the simple Woodruff key as indicated will probably be the most satisfactory, and we should like you to fit one up and <handwritten: burn> bump it as soon as possible.
