Probably valve bounce is not so much the root of the trouble as an attendant phenomenon of spring oscillation.

The aim, from the conclusion drawn from these tests, seems to be to avoid oscillation and the double spring is an improvement over the triple in this direction. We have not explored the factors controlling spring coil oscillation but generally it appears that the question depends upon spring stiffness and spring mass.

We hope to be able to modify our apparatus to give record of the motion of say the centre coil of the springs as this may be useful in shewing up differences in different types of spring. We will also try to fit the apparatus to an engine and obtain records of the valve motion under actual running conditions.
