We send you herewith print of LF.1073 showing relative positions of the side lever mechanisms on present production Phantom chassis, and the side lever mechanism designed for use with the cast dash, and which we have fitted to 12-EX. We have shown the positions for all three types of steerings, also the relative positions of the steering column and front seats. The standard Phantom positions are shown in red.

Our object in making this drawing was to show what the differences are between the two designs of side lever mechanism with a view to finding out how many parts of the present production side levers we could use for the new positions.

It will be seen that the 'D' type levers have gone forward approximately the same amount as the driver's seat and steering column, but in the case of 'C' type the gear lever is approximately in the same position as at present, although the brake lever is moved forward approximately the same amount as the column. In the case of 'B' type, however, the change gear and brake levers are both approximately in the same position as on present production.

In view of the above, it would appear that we could use the present side lever mechanism without alteration for 'B' type when we introduce the new column, cast dash etc., and for 'C' type we need only arrange for the brake lever to be further forward as shown.

In regard to D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} type, it would appear that we shall have to arrange for both levers to be moved forward to suit the new position of column etc. as the difference is too great to maintain the present side lever mechanism in this case.

On N.Sch.2070 giving the positions for the three types of side lever mechanisms you indicated that the brake lever for all three types should be at a distance of 21.250" from the centre line of the chassis, and the change gear lever should be arranged at a distance of 19" when in neutral position. These positions correspond with what we have on present production with the exception of 'D' type, and in this case the brake lever is fixed at a distance of 20" from the centre line of the chassis, and the gear lever 18" when in neutral position. It would appear that 'D' type levers have been set in at some time or other to clear the coachwork and to enable narrower scuttles to be used.
