Bailey - Chief Engineer} X7840 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG13.9.28. 'SS{S. Smith}' ENGINE UNIT. X7190 X7770 Tests on the oiling system have been carried out to ascertain the flow through the bearings etc. The oil level indicator has been checked and found not to be accurate. It should be noted that the engine was in a horizontal position when the tests were taken. Had the engine been tilted in the position assumed when in the chassis, the inaccuracies would have been greater. The following are the figures :- Gals. Gals. Gals. Gals. Actual quantity put in engine...... ½ ¾ 1¼ 1½ Quantity registered by indicator.... ¾ 1 1¼ 1½ Weight of engine unit. A detailed list of the weights of the engine will be sent through shortly. The weight of the engine and gearbox for the 'SS{S. Smith}' less controls, fan, exhaust pipe, change speed lever, temporary Claudel carb., is 936 lbs. The present Phantom engine gearbox and coupling weighs 1100 lbs. It would therefore appear that there will be a saving of approx. 150 lbs. on the engine and gearbox unit.
