CONTINUATION No. 2.

Messrs. Rolls-Royce Limited.

these on two gauges.

We agree that the pair of contacts on the one unit are not as square as they might be.

The pole pieces are concentric within the limits of the original disc gauge which we made up and which was .5675" in diameter. All pumps are however, now checked with a later gauge which is .569". This pump is one which was passed out on the earlier gauge and it will not pass the later gauge.

As regards the high pressure pump -

(1) We regret we omitted to notice the hole which you did not drill, but more attention is being paid to viewing on high pressure pumps now that they are in production and less of an experimental job.

(2) The pole piece on one unit is certainly out of centre. Actually this pump was turned out before we had a gauge in use for this. We now however have a gauge for these, which has been used on pumps sent to you more recently.

(3) The delivery valve cage is certainly uneven on the knife edge and is therefore faulty. Unfortunately it would pass the gauge one way round. We shall in future make a point of checking these in several positions.

As regards the variation in valve lift which you mention, we cannot find who discussed this with you, and honestly we cannot see any way of controlling it to 3 thou. when there are three variables; limits of length to plus and minus half a thou. on each of the three points will take some getting.

We have not yet sent you the Neoprene diaphragms called for in this letter as we have a further 100 yards of this material coming through which will be more of a production run than previous supplies, and anything we submit to you we should prefer to be production stuff rather than experimental in case there is any variation.
