Dear Sirs, We thank you for the ignition coil kindly sent along for our examination and test. We presume it will be O.K. for us to dismantle this coil if necessary. With regard to battery ignition sets, we have, for some time, on our own battery ignition, arranged for a safety gap to be incorporated in the distributor head, but we are now of the opinion that such a safety gap with modern coils and with modern conditions of running, is not necessary and we should be glad if you would confirm this or otherwise from your own experience. Another point we should like to have your opinion on is production tests of starter motors. As a rule we give these at least 5 mins. on load on the bench test before fitting them to the chassis and we are of the opinion that this is rather excessive as the actual duration of load condition on any car would never be more than 30 secs. We should be interested to know what period of load test you specify for starter motors i.e. do you think 2 mins. full load would be ample to test out the motor?
