X1282 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}16/KW. 30th July, 1936. The Woodford Motor Co., Chester Road, Woodford, Cheshire. Dear Sirs, Replying to your letter of July 28th, we have from time to time carried out tests on Cleveland Discol petrol. As far as we know at present, the only trouble likely to occur from the adoption of this fuel on the 4 1/4 litre Bentley is that the petrol pump diaphragms might not continue to function satisfactorily. Actually, although we do not recommend Cleveland Discol officially, we have no objection to it other than the remarks we have made re the petrol pump. If an owner carried a spare petrol pump he would ensure himself against petrol trouble. The reason why we are not very enthusiastic about Cleveland Discol is because to get the best results it is definitely necessary to alter the carburetter setting. Furthermore, in our experience its anti-knock value is not so high as that of the present Ethyl petrol. Ethyl petrol will function on the same carburetter setting as any No.1 spirit; therefore we recommend Ethyl petrol in preference to Cleveland Discol. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
