rJ005. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Copy to R.{Sir Henry Royce} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} PN.{Mr Northey} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} re 40/50 HP. 58-GN. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}13/E8.9.31 I am in receipt of Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}4/MJ.3.9.31. I note your remarks in regard to the adequacy of the two 5/8" bolts which hold the rear end of the engine and gearbox in position and that on 25-EX with the diamond mounting the same method was employed. Nevertheless, if these bolts did come away, the results would be disastrous, and for this reason I think we ought seriously to consider the desirability of leaving the rear engine feet just clear of the frame in the way you have done on customers' cars which have had the rear engine feet disconnected so that, in the event of the bolts giving way, the engine could only drop a very small amount. I should like to discuss this matter when at Derby, and have in mind the desirability of doing this when we standardise the diamond mounting. With regard to 58-GN I think it would be as well to adopt your suggestion of fitting this up with the conversion scheme with the diamond engine mounting. It would, as you say, give us an idea of how much it is going to cost to do it on customers' cars. Additionally - and possibly almost more important - it would give us fairly quickly another car on which to try this scheme. The one point which rather disturbs me in connection with this scheme as fitted to 25-EX is that practically all the people who have tried it report on the "jellying" of the frame, which I gather on this car is objectionable, and it would be disastrous to standardize something which is going to lead us into some other trouble. I should be glad if you would let me know approximately how long you would require 58-GN for this purpose, and whether you would be ready if I sent it to you as soon as possible after the Schneider Trophy.
