X.6066. 40/50 Dynamo Brushgear and Commutator.

The complaints, criticisms, and suggestions which have recently been made in connection with the 40/50 brushgear, may, for convenience of investigation, be divided into two classes.
(a) Brush noise.
(b) Variation in dynamo output.

(a) Brush noise.
This trouble arose largely through the Test Dept., raising their standard of silence, as they succeeded in quietening various parts on the engine.
Immediate steps were taken to reduce noise, since when experiments have been going on with a view to eliminating the trouble altogether.
(See PD 53/5-6-30).
Amongst the immediate steps taken, was the fixing of limits to the clearance between the brushholder and the commutator. It had been found that the tops of noisy brushes vibrated.
