Dear Sir, Re Testing of Straight Side Tyres for Noise Effect due to tread pattern - we have carried out a number of further tests with the assistance of your experimental car, and have been able to demonstrate quite definitely that the noise is very largely due to the trapping of air in the recesses in the centre of the pattern. We have sent the car back to you with two tyres on the rear wheels in which the traction tread pattern has been modified in such a way that we find that these tyres are as silent as we think any non-skid tread can well be, and further that there is no marked increase of noise when the running direction of the pattern is reversed. We shall be very glad to have your own views on these tyres at your earliest convenience, and in the meantime are preparing some more tyres in which the pattern will be properly moulded - those at present on the care are only experimental.
