X201 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}3/HP.28.6.33. Bensport Front Axle. With reference to the front axle which twisted under severe braking loads, we have investigated this and find that we can introduce some strength at a first convenient opportunity without appreciable sacrifice of weight. We have made N. Sch.3749, herewith, showing what we propose. (1) We have removed the excessive hollowing out of the section at the point where the twisting was found to take place, and have substituted a nearly solid section. (2) We have increased the thickness of the outer race of the upper roller bearing. (3) We have increased the diameter of the pivot pin. (4) We suggest that some metal shall be taken out of the stub axle part. These three last modifications have been done without altering the forging. The total increase of weight calculated is approximately .03 of a pound, so we consider we may say there has been no increase of weight. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
