There is a general demand by customers to have the exhaust fish-tail carried back as far as the rear cross-member. This chiefly comes about by the modern tendency of cowling-in the back of the body. As we are proposing to standardise such a cowling it will be necessary for all exhaust pipes to be extended. We have tried two schemes, the first was designed by Derby Sch./471 Fig.2. This has been fitted to a number of customers cars and has also been run approximately 10,000 total hours on two experimental cars. We have had no trouble with this scheme. We have received a scheme from W.W. N.Sch.3144. This has been fitted to 27-EX. and has run about 1,000 miles. This also has given no trouble. Either of these schemes we consider satisfactory but the W.W. scheme is more expensive. We should like to have comments from W.W. as regards which one they wish us to standardise.
