Final Report on Exp. 168 247
Steering Pivot Tests on Track.

On the same car which we broke one of the old type pivots in 10 minutes by running round the track over ballast bags we fitted the present type pivot and repeated the tests.
We kept at the same speed 20 to 25 m.p.h. or an average of about 20 bumps per minute.

Total running time | Remarks
80 mins. | Silencer bracket broke, replaced.
180 " | Cross steering tube buckled, this was P.1505 which has a .375" set in. It bent slightly before it went. We replaced with a straight tube.
240 " | Bolts holding the leaves of the springs together sheared, renewed.
450 " | Radiator leaking in the bottom corner, caused by it catching the front spring clip on the bump. Bolts in springs sheared Again, front axle bent slightly.
480 " | Near side lug on front tubular cross member of the frame cracked, rivets holding lugs shaken but not loose, dumb irons shaken but not loose, frame bent when front buffers were fixed.
540 " | Bolts in springs sheared for the 3rd time, near side pivot slightly cracked on the usual place.

Examination of parts after the test :-

Pivots. - Off side O.K. not bent or bushes out of line. Near side except for a crack not bent, bushes in line
Axle. - bent backwards .300" and upwards .125".
