Test report on steering tube friction, buffer clearances, and brake wear over mileage.

-86- SIDE STEERING TUBE & CROSS STEERING TUBE. LOP.F.79861.LOP.G.77482. The cross steering tube friction load taken at the beginning of the mileage was 135 ins.lbs. At 5000 miles it had dropped to 125 ins.lbs. The contacts and ball ends were examined. They were in a good condition and amply lubricated. At 10,000 miles the friction load was 110 ins.lbs. and the condition of the ball ends and contact faces was good, and lubrication ample. The side steering tube was set with a friction load of 50 ins.lbs. At 5000 miles it was 25 ins.lbs. To improve the steering the springs were set up making a friction load of 40 ins.lbs. and at 7000 miles they were again set up bringing the friction load up to 50 ins.lbs. At 10,000 miles this had dropped to 40 ins.lbs. The contacts were in a good condition and lubrication ample. BUFFER CLEARANCES. The buffer clearances with no passengers, 28 gallons of petrol in tank, and water and oil, were, Rear, 6.125", Front 2.250" at the start of the test. At the finish of the test they were, Rear 5.937", Front 2.187". FRONT & REAR BRAKES. LOP.G.80993. N.S.3904. 3931. R.R.SCH.510-11-12-S85. LOP.G.81059. Front brakes, wider shoes incorporating linings secured by Bifurcated rivets. The brakes have been efficient, progressive and quiet. Upon examination the two front drums were in excellent condition, and the brake linings were in a good condition and no sign of pulling with the bifurcated rivetting. The rear brake drums were in excellent condition. The O.S. brake anchorage had become covered with grease and oil. Apparently the grease had worked out of the hub and choked the drain hole, consequently oil escaping down the axle tube could not drain away. The brake linings had a quantity of oil on it. The N.S. was in a very good condition. The wear of the brakes during the mileage has been:- Rear. O.S. 3 half turns. Front. O.S. 3 half turns N.S. 10 half turns. Front. N.S. 3 half turns, of adjustment. | ||
