X5260. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}1/M31.1.31. C. to R.{Sir Henry Royce} SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} C. to WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} JAPAN 3. BONNET, RADIATOR & DASH. X.5260. X.5250. X.5500. we send herewith N. sch. 3208. shewing the proposed proportions of the bonnet radiator and dashboard for Japan 3. based on those of 18-G-IV. and the criticisms of the appearance of that car. It was generally agreed that the bonnet looked short, tall, and stumpy, and too flat on the top. The height of the side hinge of the proposed bonnet is the same as that for the Phantom N. 2. series, which is logical in that the bodies are the same height and should have the same waist line. it is .850" lower than 18-G-4. so this gives greater curvature to the bonnet top, which is desired. The bonnet extends 2" aft of the present position thus making it possible for the width to be increased at the back to 36". The tank of 18-G-4. was excessively shallowed by reducing it from 4.5 to 4.125". By making this tank 4.25 we have been able to give more curvature to the bonnet top. No constructional details should be regarded as the units have yet to be designed. The object of this drawing is to set out at an early date a bonnet etc which we believe would meet sales requirements, and to give them a chance to criticise the proportions and if necessary have a mock-up made before the units reach an advanced stage. Will BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} please send us 3 prints by return of post as we need them for further work, and also a print to SG.{Arthur F.
