X4038. Expl: Dept: Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., Derby, Angleterre. 19th.,July 1929. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., Sevres, Paris, France. MR. Hancock from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson} We have explained the trouble which we have been having with the petrol gauge to Major Searight of Claudel Hobson's. So far we have failed to convince him that the trouble is due to the gauge design. He is quite insistent that there must be some leak in either the pressure or the balance line. I explained to him precisely what precautions we have taken to show that there must be no leak, but he still maintains that there may be a leak due to a hair crack down one of the unions or a leak in the mounting of the glass tube of the dashboard unit which is masked until the gauge is fitted to the dashboard. While it is very difficult to believe what Searight says, there is no doubt that he has had an enormous amount of experiance with these gauges and therefore, to settle the question, I am sending you out a complete new air line dashboard and unit which have never been used so that you will start with perfect nipples etc., and if this fails in the same way as the other, we shall be convinced that the trouble is due to some unique conditions which we have succeeded in producing on our French tests. We shall be much obliged if you will let us know some information with regard to this gauge as soon as | ||
