Memo. HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1/AJ221231, raises a very important point in connection with the Continental Phantom programme.

R.{Sir Henry Royce} has said that we shall have a Continental P. 2. ready for sale in the Spring of 1932, which shall have the increased performance by some carburetter, whether RR. or SU.

At the same time he stated that if we adopted SUs. on this model then we ought to go right over to SU. and standardise it on all models, a thing he was very loath to do as there are some features of this carburetter he does not consider good.

The design work on the RR. Continental carburetter, pipes, and controls, has been completed, and nothing more can be done until test shews what alterations, if any, are required.

As regards the SU., if we are likely to adopt this then we ought to put the design work in hand at once as lack of time demands that both schemes should be got ready in parallel.

We think the following require attention on the SU. sch. in addition to the design of the induction pipes and control gear:

(1) Slow running not good enough. Requires addition of throttle edge carburation plug. This is rendered still more necessary if governor is not used.

(2) Separate starting carburetter required to ensure easy start under worst conditions and avoid interfering with normal range of mixture control.

(3) Distance from jet to throttle valve can be reduced with advantage.

(4) It may be desirable to use the J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 3. automatic control of extra cylinder lubrication.

With regard to the brief description of the RR. Continental carburetter on page 3., this scarcely does the instrument justice. The central idea is to make an expanding diffuser jet carburetter possessing the same character as our present standard type, but with the range of operation extended below, and particularly above, to meet the increased output required from the engine.
