Dear Sirs,

We have received your letter addressed to our Dr. Maybach informing us of the difficulties experienced with the gearbox you have constructed using the principles of our overspeed transmission.

When proceeding as you have described, the crash must necessarily occur, as you will see from the following consideration:

The car is in top gear and runs with considerable speed. If, after preselecting 3rd gear and short release of the accelerator, the engine speed (by again increasing the gas supply) is not increased to such extent that the opposite dog clutch could engage, it is constantly rejected because (see enclosed diagram 15911) the gears h - g run fast due to the high speed of the car, and the dog clutch d runs with much less speed corresponding to the low engine speed. - If the driver now changes from position 1 (3rd gear) to position 2 (top gear), the slowlier running claw d will engage with a bad crash with the claw of the gear e which also turns at a high speed owing to its being connected with h - g through f.{Mr Friese} This crash is due to the
