SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X7230 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG21. 6. 29. 21-EX CAR. Y3875 With reference to SG{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}2/W20.6.29. There is a red lamp to indicate that the water is boiling fitted to this car. this fitting is now embodied in the patch instrument and is not so obvious as when it was a separate unit. It may happen that the lamp on 21-EX car is not working either due to the lamp itself having burnt out or some connection having failed. All the SS.{S. Smith} cars are fitted with the red lamp scheme which except that it is embodied in the patch instrument is identical to the present Phantom. As regards the popping in the silencer. This must be peculiar to 21-EX car. From the average results on 6 SS.{S. Smith} cars we have tried, we should say they are at least equal to the present Phantom. You will remember that R.{Sir Henry Royce} when he was at Le 'snadel emphasised very strongly that one of the advantages noted on the SS.{S. Smith} car xxx they were running there this year was the absence of popping in the exhaust. We have satisfied ourselves that we are no worse than the standard Phantom in this respect. We will endeavour to get in touch with Whyman who is going with PN.{Mr Northey} and ask him to go over the adjustments on this car which may be the cause of the trouble.
