-2- This is the best scheme we have thought of, but unfortunately we find up to the present that the Sylphon tubes' price (29/- each) makes the adoption of this scheme impossible. We are asking the Order Office to go into the question of obtaining a cheap Sylphon tube such as we saw used on the Cadillac. If and when this is available we shall wish to consider the use of this flexible metallic filler tube. In order that the scheme of an outside filler on the body may not be held up due to the cost of the filler tube, we have made LeC 4850 showing the same filler head with the petrol proof rubber connection to the tank. This is the scheme which we wish to be fitted to the next two experimental Phantom III chassis, 35-EX and 36-EX. We are sending a drawing of this scheme to the two Coachbuilders concerned, Messrs. Park Ward & Co., and Messrs. Hooper & Co, in order that they may modify the bodies which have been allocated to suit. We would like to have, as soon as possible, a pair of filler heads so that they can mount the same in the bodies. We understand that rubber tubing is used extensively by other makers and that we ourselves use rubber tube for petrol filler necks, obtained either from the Avon Co. or the Goodridge Co. in petrol proof rubber. We have asked the Order Office to obtain for us a sample length of tube 1ft. 6ins. long and 2 1/4 ins. internal diameter, so that we can determine whether we shall require two or three ply fabric core. Provided this scheme proves satisfactory on test it would appear to be no more costly than our present filler, and it is an advantage that there should be practically no demand for special fillers, whilst the difficult feature of the vent pipe on the top of the tank is deleted, and incidentally the tank can be filled to its complete capacity.
