X.8970 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to CJ. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} SECRET E3/M30.5.24. E.A.C.11. ENGINE WITH OPPOSED SPARKING PLUGS AND INDUCTION PIPE IN HEAD. X.9070 X.9970 We are at the moment doing everything possible to finish EAC.2. chassis before the Whitsun holiday. In the meantime we send you herewith drawing No.LeC.1876., shewing the above, which is quite an experimental job and does not influence EAC.2. This drawing is a somewhat incomplete scheme dealing with the fundamental difficulties attendant on having the sparking plugs on opposite sides of the engine, and Mr. Royce would like you to carry on with the job and prepare drawings of the cylinder head etc. for this scheme. You will notice that we have arranged one large pipe feeding from the forward exhaust manifold to the jacket on the induction uptake, and that this pipe makes its connection on one side of the jacket. If it is found necessary the jacket may be provided with a fin or passage-way so as to carry the gas round to the back of the elbow where most of the heat is required, but Naturally we should like to avoid this complication if possible.
