Steering Removed from Chassis GUL-41. The above steering was removed from the chassis owing to a complaint of a very large amount of backlash and loss of oil from the steering box via the bijur system. The steering gear was dismantled for examination in the experimental department, and it was found that one of the packing washers which locate the outer races of the rockershaft bearings was missing. The washer in question was the one at the nearside end of the rockershaft. The spigot on the end cover which feeds bijur oil to the inside of the rockershaft was broken off and the loose parts showed unmistakable signs of having had a large radial load from the rockershaft. The absence of the packing washer would explain all the failures on the gear, as the rockershaft bearings would no longer support the shaft and the bijur oil spigot would be subject to the full load. The incorrect meshing of the cam and rockershaft would account for the backlash. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/F.J.Hardy. | ||
