Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 48410 CWB3/GH/20.7.28. SPRINGING. Following the use by R.{Sir Henry Royce} yesterday morning of our Weymann London Trials car 20 h.p., a discussion was held on the general situation regarding the springing of R.R. cars, at which B.J. R.{Sir Henry Royce} Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Cx.{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} and CWB. were present. It was established that the majority of our complaints regarding springing, referred to the roughness of riding at speeds below 25 m.p.h. It was under these circumstances that R.{Sir Henry Royce} found the car referred to above (GYL-25) so rough. To deal with this matter it was decided to take the following action, as soon as can be arranged. 1. PARTICULAR. To improve GYL-25. (a) Try the result of fitting balloon tyres 6" diameter 20" rims and of reducing the pressures used in these to the lowest possible minimum. (b) Try 10% lighter springs of present standard pattern. (c) Try 10% lighter springs in rear constructed with no "nip". Action has been taken on these points in another memo CHB2/GH20.7.28. 2. GENERAL. With particular reference to 40/50 h.p. cars. Cut down the general rating of rear springs fitted to all cars by approximately 10% resulting in the rear springs, which would be fitted to any given car, being of a strength of 100 to 150 lbs lighter than would be fitted under existing arrangements. In addition, it was arranged that a set of rear springs for 40/50 h.p. cars should be tried, constructed without any "nip" and it is desired that the test of these should be made on GL{G. Linnett}-RF, which is at W. at the moment. Will Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} obtain all the necessary particulars from this car to obtain a set of springs for this purpose and forward them to N. so that they may be fitted when available. Before putting the provisions of No. 2 - GENERAL - into force, B.J. wishes to be informed by Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} of the experience we have of running on French roads with springs of much relative strength and of what type of shock dampers were in use on such tests. | ||
